Musculoskeletal Radiology Practice Subspecialization in Canada: A Subject of Substance?

Abstract: Scientific and technological advances in medical imaging have had a profound impact on health care around the world including Canada. The cost of imaging, however, continues to rise along with innovation. Building a practical subspecialty musculoskeletal imaging service offers the specialty of radiology an opportunity to show how radiologists can consistently add value and improve outcomes without adding a great cost burden to the health care system.

“…A radiologist's ultimate goal is to provide accurate, timely, and effective patient care. In recent decades, we have witnessed unprecedented advancements in medical imaging, and it is hard to believe that any other specialty has had a greater impact on patient care than radiology (17). Therefore, MDT meetings are important to facilitate cooperation between orthopedics and radiology.…”

“…In the era of precision medicine, we are witnessing a constant shift toward more subspecialised physicians and clinical activities, which is something occurring in all fields of radiology, particularly in musculoskeletal (MSK) imaging [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. This is probably due to the ongoing introduction of novel technologies, the improvements in knowledge, and the increasing expectations of other specialists for more and more accurate diagnosis through imaging [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ]. Hence, the improved performance of musculoskeletal radiologists goes hand in hand with the increased demands and needs of other physicians.…”

“…The importance of a constant update and training is proven by a previous study, which revealed that musculoskeletal scans account for more than 70% of all magnetic resonance examinations performed in Italy [ 15 ]. In this setting, musculoskeletal education and training during residency is essential to guarantee high-quality radiology practice and research [ 4 , 16 , 17 ].…”
