Music Modulates Cognitive Flexibility? An Investigation of the Benefits of Musical Training on Markers of Cognitive Flexibility

Abstract: Cognitive flexibility enables the rapid change in goals humans want to attain in everyday life as well as in professional contexts, e.g., as musicians. In the laboratory, cognitive flexibility is usually assessed using the task-switching paradigm. In this paradigm participants are given at least two classification tasks and are asked to switch between them based on valid cues or memorized task sequences. The mechanisms enabling cognitive flexibility are investigated through two empirical markers, namely switch… Show more

“…Cognitive flexibility is a key concept within executive function, which is defined as the ability to transform in different settings or psychological preconceptions (Chen et al, 2017 ), and it helps individuals adjust their thoughts and goals more flexibly in their daily and professional lives according to changing needs (Gade and Schlemmer, 2021 ). Musicians have stronger task-switching abilities and consume less global switch costs than non-musicians, suggesting that musicians have enhanced global processing capabilities and can switch between switching and non-switching components more efficiently (Moradzadeh et al, 2015 ).…”

“…The main element of cognitive flexibility is the ability to change cognitive sets to adapt to variable stimuli in the environment (14). Denoting distress tolerance, flexibility is defined as a person's ability to cope with negative emotions (15). Individuals with low levels of distress tolerance presume emotion as an intolerable entity and deny its existence.…”
