Mutagenic and genotoxic effects of Guelma’s urban wastewater, Algeria

Abstract: Assessment of water pollution and its effect upon river biotic communities and human health is indispensable to develop control and management strategies. In this study, the mutagenicity and genotoxicity of urban wastewater of the city of Guelma in Algeria were examined between April 2012 and April 2013. For this, two biological tests, namely Amesand chromosomal aberrations (CA) test in Allium cepa root tips were employed on the samples collected from five different sampling stages (S1-S5). In Ames test, two s… Show more

“…Some 11.2% of the volume is released into the subsoil via the traditional pits and 7.3% undergoes pre-treatment before its discharge into water streams (Table 2). These results confirmed other studies on pollution of river waters in Algeria (Badri et al, 2012;Guettaf et al, 2017;Tabet et al, 2015). The results obtained during this study showed that the majority of groundwater contamination by sewage in the river infiltration process depends on several environmental and climate factors (Kendouci et al, 2013).…”

“…In Algeria, the pollution of surface water has been demonstrated through several researches. One can cite as an example, the work of Tabet et al (2015) for the river of Seybouse (North-East of Algeria). He shows the presence of mutagenic in the river (salmonella typhimurium).…”

“…The herbicide caused a significant increase in the number of nucleoli and MN. Tabet et al (2015) examined the mutagenicity and genotoxicity of urban wastewater, Guelma city, Algeria between April 2012 and April 2013 using A. cepa CA and MI end points. The samples were collected from five different sampling stages (S1-S5).…”
