Recent progress in Web Real-Time Communication (WebRTC) promotes multi-apps environment by creating islands of communication apps where users of one website or service cannot easily communicate with those of another. We describe the architecture and implementation of a multi-platform system to do user reachability in multiple communication services where users decide how they want to be reached on multiple apps, e.g. in an organization that has voice-over-IP, web conferencing and messaging from di®erent vendors. We argue for user and endpoint driven reachability policies and cross-app interactions, instead of pair-wise service federation or global location service. Our architecture separates the user contacts from reachability apps, and has several independent and non-interoperable WebRTC-based apps for two-way and multi-party multimedia communication. Our software is implemented using HTML5 and JavaScript, and using a cross-platform development tool, runs as native apps on mobile as well as personal computers. Our°exible implementation can be used for enterprise or personal communications, or as a white-labeled app for consumers of a business.

Context aware communication services rely on information sources and sensors, to derive users’ current situation and potential needs, and to adapt their communication services accordingly. If extensive studies have been driven on context awareness by industrials and researchers from academia, the design of such systems without modifying uses and manners of underlying communication services—while keeping them simple, intuitive, and reactive—remains a challenge. In this work, we introduce a context aware communication system that takes into account user’s preferences, workload, and situation to customize telephony services. In this implementation, we use IMS for communication management. The benefits of this implementation are the enhancement of IMS with context awareness features, and the coupling of user preferences with contextual information to provide improved service customization, without modifying the user experience.

To support user mobility across different devices, communication session continuity should be enabled at session initiation and during a session. The session continuity can be managed by either a user or dedicated network nodes such as back-to-back user agent (B2BUA) in IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture. When network manages the session continuity, user experience is enriched because users do not need to know how to perform session transfer. However, in IMS architecture, three different network nodes (SIP forking proxy, SIP registrar and B2BUA) need to cooperate for session continuity. When single user (callee) logs in from different devices, it is very hard to achieve cooperation. In addition, these network nodes should be scalable when many users request this service simultaneously. This paper proposes a general architecture that supports the user mobility and how the general architecture can be realized into a Web-based communication system. Our initial analytical result shows that the usage of computing resources (e.g. CPU) is reduced while supporting scalability, thanks to the simple Web client service infrastructure and Web Socket connections on top of HTTP.
