“…Proline accumulation in plants is related to water stress tolerance ( La et al ., 2019 ; Moreno-Galván et al ., 2020 ), and it is the most biochemical trait of drought tolerance ( Singh et al ., 2014 ). Lowering osmotic potential can help water uptake ( Rani et al ., 2022 ) and maintain cellular turgor ( Abid et al ., 2018 a ; Soni et al ., 2021 ). This is particularly important since metabolic processes appear to be more closely linked to cell turgor than leaf water potential ( Leuschner et al ., 2019 ; Soni et al ., 2021 ).…”

“…According to Liu et al (2020), AMF enhance drought tolerance by reducing the osmotic potential, and the levels of soluble sugars and proline in the leaves of AMF-inoculated tobacco plants were higher than those of noninoculated plants. Rani et al (2023) reported that AMF-inoculated plants exhibit higher accumulation of compatible solutions, thus contributing to the maintenance of turgor pressure and facilitating water absorption in wheat plants. The plants effectively counteract drought stress by enhancing leaf water potential through the accumulation of compatible solutes, which improve the osmoregulation capacity of plants, thus allowing them to maintain optimal cellular function under water-deficient conditions (Reyhani Haghighi et al 2021).…”

“…Inoculation with PSB significantly reduced MDA concentration, an effect similar to that of AMF. Several studies have shown that MDA concentration in mycorrhizal plants is correlated with drought tolerance (Abbaspour et al, 2012;Rani et al, 2018). Rahimzadeh and Pirzad (2017b) showed that under water deficit MDA was significantly reduced in plants inoculated with both AMF and PSB.…”
