Myopericytoma of the lip: Report of case

Abstract: This case may aid others in recognizing this very rare entity. As the myopericytoma shares morphologic features with other perivascular myoid neoplasms, it should be included in the differential diagnosis of well-circumscribed, vascular, slow-growing lesions of the mouth.

“…The majority of cases are negative for desmin, but rare cases of focal desmin reactivity have been reported [2,5,15,16]. In our case, the strong SMA expression and lack of CD34 staining ruled out hemangiopericytoma and solitary myofibroma [17][18][19]. MPC and angioleiomyoma have overlapping clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features and are considered to exist on a single spectrum of tumors [15].…”

“…Most cases of myopericytoma behave in a benign fashion, although a few malignant and/or recurring cases were described (6,9). In the oral cavity only a case of myopericytoma of low grade malignancy was reported (11).…”

“…It mostly arises within the skin and subcutaneous tissues of extremities (3). Myopericytoma of the oral cavity is extremely rare, only several cases have been reported in the literature (2,(4)(5)(6)(7). To the best of our knowledge, there is only two reported cases of myopericytoma localized to the tongue (4,5).…”

“…In our case, the patient had a painless, slowly growing nodule in the subcutaneous tissue of the lower leg. Most cases of MP are benign lesions, although a few recurring and/or malignant cases have been described 7,[11][12][13] . It seems that the clinical outcome of rare malignant myopericytoma is strongly associated with the depth of the neoplasm.…”
