Myristic Acid, A Side Chain of Phorbol Myristate Acetate (PMA), Can Activate Human Polymorphonuclear Leukocytes to Produce Oxygen Radicals More Potently than PMA

Abstract: Myristic acid (MyA), which is a saturated fatty acid (C14:0) and a side chain of phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA), was examined if MyA stimulates human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) to release oxygen radicals comparable to PMA by applying electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR)-spin-trapping method. When MyA was added to isolated human PMNs, spin adducts of 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO)-OH and DMPO-OOH were time-dependently observed. The amounts of these spin adducts were larger than those o… Show more

“…Also in a prospective study, men in the lower tercile of saturated fat consumption compared to those in the upper tercile had three times the risk of dying from PC [29]. The link between dietary fat content and the development of PC is possibly related to the increase in sex hormone and IGF-1 concentration [33], alteration of cell membrane function, and modulation of metabolic processes [34] or to increased oxygen radicals generation [35]. …”

“…Inositol is a growth factor that lowers the cholesterol level. Furthermore, the effects of metabolites that are negatively associated with the diversity are unknown (Arabinose) or with lower toxicity (Myristic Acid) 28 . We hence postulate that higher microbial diversity in the milk microbiome is likely a ‘signature’ of healthy milk microbiome of healthy mothers, and therefore beneficial to infants.…”

“…Myristic acid, is also known as tetradecanoic acid, which is a side chain of phorbol myristate acetate (PMA). It activates human polymorphonuclear leukocytes to produce oxygen radicals more potently than PMA does ( Tada et al, 2009 ). Although the levels of these two metabolites were downregulated in the raw SO group, we know that the organism is a balanced environment, and either too high or too low will have some effects.…”
