N on Dispersive Chemical Deacidification of Crude Palm Oil in Hollow Fiber Membrane Contactor

Abstract: Abstract. Performance of chemical deacidification of crude palm oil (CPO) using aqueous NaOH solution in a polysulfone hollow fiber ultrafiltration membrane was investigated. The effects of operating temperature, NaOH concentration and flow rates on percentage of free fatty acids (FFA) removal, oil loss, soap entrainment and overall mass transfer coefficient were evaluated. Overall mass transfer coefficients, soap content in oil and neutral oil loss all increased when the temperature was increased from 60 to 7… Show more

“…The oxidation of iodide to iodine using ozone as oxidation agent in the membrane contactor used as contacting device has shown promising results for iodine recovery from brine [51]. Compared to conventional contacting devices, the membrane contactor has some advantages, such as better contacting performance, larger interfacial area, and ease of direct scale-up [52,53]. With these advantages, this method could potentially be interesting for recovering iodine from brine.…”

“…Membrane technology is widely developed due to its potential applications in almost every industrial sector . Energy efficiency, high separation capacity, high selectivity, reduction in a number of unit processes, and relatively low cost are several advantages of membrane technology that make this technology competitive in various applications . An ion‐exchange membrane (IEM) is a charged membrane that is used in electromembrane processes (e.g., electrodialysis, diffusion dialysis, electrolysis, electrodeionization) as an ion‐selective barrier and also as the key to the processes .…”
