N‐terminal‐probrain natriuretic peptide as a biomarker of moderate to severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia in preterm infants: A prospective observational study

Abstract: The NT-proBNP levels at 5-10 days of life may identify preterm infants with an HsPDA who are at high risk of BPD or death and may be useful for individualized preventive and therapeutic strategies.

“…NT-proBNP was included in the model as a predictor. Over the years, there has been increasing recognition that new biochemical markers, such as NT-proBNP, are useful in the diagnosis of BPD (26). Pro BNP synthesized and secreted by myocardial cells is cleaved into bioactive Btype natriuretic peptide (BNP) and inactive NT-proBNP when volume and pressure are overloaded.…”

“…Recent studies have also shown the applicability of serum NT-proBNP as a suitable biomarker in infants with BPD-PH. [38][39][40] Based on our experience, especially in infants, absolute values of NT-proBNP have a high inter-individual variance, are strongly dependent on postnatal and gestational age, and thus have limited value in establishing the diagnosis or severity of PH, especially in young infants. However, longitudinal assessment of NT-proBNP in combination with echocardiography is very useful to assess disease progression and/or response to treatment.…”

“…The severity of ductal shunt was graded according to a multiparametric echocardiography score as none/mild, moderate, and severe. HsPDA was considered as a moderate-severe shunt and pharmacological closure was indicated per protocol in all cases of severe echocardiographic shunt or when shunt is moderate and there is hemodynamic and/or respiratory compromise attributable to PDA [26].…”
