Nano-crystalline hydroxyapatite bio-mineral for the treatment of strontium from aqueous solutions

Abstract: Hydroxyapatites were analysed using electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis. Examination of a bacterially produced hydroxyapatite (Bio-HA) by scanning electron microscopy showed agglomerated nano-sized particles; XRD analysis confirmed that the Bio-HA was hydroxyapatite, with an organic matter content of 7.6%; XRF analysis gave a Ca/P ratio of 1.55, also indicative of HA. The size of the Bio-HA crystals was calculated as ~25 nm from XRD data using the Scherrer equatio… Show more

“…The value indicated in this study is consistent with those from previous studies where 1.72 and 1.73 were obtained for HAp derived from pig and bovine, respectively . It has also been reported that the molar ratio of calcium to potassium for theoretical HAp can be as high as 1.71 depending on the means of production …”

“…It has been reported that the molar ratio of Ca/P depends on the method of HAP synthesis and can range from 1.46 to 2.05. 22,23) As Mg 2+ (ionic radius 72 pm) and Sr 2+ (118 pm) can ion-exchange with Ca 2+ (100 pm), the molar ratios in this study can be recalculated accounting for (Ca + Mg + Sr)/P. With (Ca + Mg + Sr)/P the ChemHAP, and FHAPs values approached the theoretical value of 1.67 (Table 1).…”

“…Also, addition of nanodimensional HA remarkably inhibits desorption of heavy metals from soils, which increases their geochemical stability in metal contaminated soils [769]. Furthermore, nanodimensional HA was found to hold a great potential to remove cationic heavy metal species from industrial wastewater [770][771][772][773][774]. Finally yet importantly, nanodimensional and nanocrystalline calcium orthophosphates occasionally might possess a catalytic activity [775,776].…”
