Nano‐curcumin safely prevents streptozotocin‐induced inflammation and apoptosis in pancreatic beta cells for effective management of Type 1 diabetes mellitus

Abstract: Together, these data indicate a potentially translatable dose of nCUR that is safe and efficacious in improving beta cell function, which could prevent T1DM.

“…Pre-treatment of STZ-induced, diabetic, Sprague-Dawley rats with nanosystems encapsulating curcumin (nCurcumin; 50 mg/kg b.w./day) for 28 days resulted in reduced serum glucose levels and increased insulin levels, indicating reduced hyperglycemia [49]. Pancreatic islet cell death was significantly reduced with nCurcumin pre-treatment.…”

“…Pancreatic islet cell death was significantly reduced with nCurcumin pre-treatment. In addition, pancreatic, pro-inflammatory cytokine (IL-1α, granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF), IL-10, IL-17A, IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, IL-4, granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF), interferon gamma (IFN-γ), IL-2, IL-5, IL-13 and IL-12p70) levels and pancreatic 8-oxo-dG levels were reduced with nCurcumin pre-treatment, suggesting reduced pro-inflammatory cytokine-induced apoptosis [49].…”

“…Recent studies have illustrated that Cur possessed a variety of properties, such as anti-oxidant, anti-inflammation, anti-tumor, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and had a potential against various disease, i.e. arthritis, allergies, diabetes, AD, and other chronic diseases (Perrone et al., 2015 ; Ganugula et al., 2017 ; Stanic, 2017 ). Cur targets the two histological markers of AD, amyloid beta (Aβ), and tau.…”
