Nano Silica and Metakaolin Effects on the Behavior of Concrete Containing Rubber Crumbs

Abstract: The excessive production of worn tires remaining from the transportation system and the lack of proper procedures to recycle or reuse these materials have caused critical environmental issues. Due to the rubber’s toughness, this material could be implemented to increase concrete toughness, and by crushing the tires concrete aggregates can be replaced proportionally with rubber crumbs and large quantities of scrapped rubber. However, this substitution decreases the concrete strength. In this study, crushed rubb… Show more

“…It is composed of binder and aggregates with a suitable quantity of water [1,2]. The use of concrete is measured as the 2nd most consumed component after water, and today, construction of any structure is deemed impossible without the use of concrete [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. Such a wide acceptance of concrete as a construction material is due to its durability, availability, and strength properties [1,11].…”

“…Fifteen percentages of fine- and coarse-grained crumbs substitutions improved sound transmission losses by 190% and 228%, respectively. They also reported [ 7 ] that the ultimate compressive strength, the tensile strength, and the modulus of elasticity of the concrete with rubber crumbs are reduced. The negative impact of the rubber crumbs was reduced by using an optimum percentage of nanosilica and metakaolin additives.…”

“…Accordingly, researchers are motivated to reduce the impact of construction materials on the environment and enhance the mechanical properties of construction materials. This has led to the use of waste materials (recycled aggregate and rubber) and cement kiln dust (CKD) in the manufacture of concrete and studies on how these materials affect its behavior [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ].…”

“…During the hardening stage for cement forming, cracks and voids are easily left in the structure [3]; these characteristics reduce the bearing capacity of the cement and accelerate the erosion effect of corrosive media, thus reducing the service life of the cement structure. Nowadays, the performance of cement has been improved by many efforts such as adjusting the cement mortars ratio, optimizing the aggregate gradation, and adding reinforcements [4][5][6][7]. However, these do not change the structure of cement hydration products, and the problems of high brittleness and cracking of the cement mortars still exist.…”
