Nano-Technological Approaches for Targeting Kidney Diseases With Focus on Diabetic Nephropathy: Recent Progress, and Future Perspectives

Abstract: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease worldwide. With the rising prevalence of diabetes, the occurrence of DN is likely to hit pandemic proportions. The current treatment strategies employed for DN focus on the management of blood pressure, glycemia, and cholesterol while neglecting DN’s molecular progression mechanism. For many theranostic uses, nano-technological techniques have evolved in biomedical studies. Several nanotechnologically based theranostics have been devised… Show more

“…In recent years, the application of nanomedicines is gradually emerging in the treatment of renal diseases. Owing to the superior targetability and improved pharmacokinetic properties of nanomedicine, kidney-targeted nanomedicine carrying drug candidates can help to address the challenges associated with DN pharmacotherapy ( 251 ).…”

“…Numerous nanomedicine-based drug delivery systems have been developed to deliver therapeutic agents specifically to the kidney ( 252 ). For example, drug nanocomplexes containing low-molecular-weight chitosan bind the megalin-cubilin receptor in proximal tubules ( 251 ). Albumin nanoparticles with specific size target mesangial cells.…”

“…Transported drugs pass through the immune clearance system, thus eliminating unwanted off-target effects and improving treatment effects. 22 , 23 Therefore, the development of nanoparticle-mediated treatments is urgently required to overcome the adverse effects of conventional drug delivery methods. The current status of research and development in DN treatment is introduced and described in Table 1 .…”

“…20 With developments in nanotechnology and biochemistry, a nanoplatform drug delivery system can be built in which anti-diabetic medicine can be broken down, implanted, encapsulated, or attached to nanoparticles. 21,22 In addition, nanoparticles modified by active targeting molecules can also contribute to efficient drug delivery. Transported drugs pass through the immune clearance system, thus eliminating unwanted off-target effects and improving treatment effects.…”
