Nanocarrier System: State-of-the-Art in Oral Delivery of Astaxanthin

Abstract: Astaxanthin (3,3′-dihydroxy-4,4′-diketo-β-β carotene), which belongs to the xanthophyll class, has shown potential biological activity in in vitro and in vivo models including as a potent antioxidant, anti-lipid peroxidation and cardiovascular disease prevention agent. It is mainly extracted from an alga, Haematococcus pluvialis. As a highly lipid-soluble carotenoid, astaxanthin has been shown to have poor oral bioavailability, which limits its clinical applications. Recently, there have been several suggestio… Show more

“…ASX nanoparticles have good entrapment efficiency and high stability, but showed poor water solubilities and low loading rate of ASX. Compared with nanoparticles, nanoliposomes have less crystal arrangement in structure and can provide more ASX binding space ( Abdol Wahab et al, 2022 ). But the poor stability and inefficient encapsulation of nanoliposomes together with excessive lipid may cause more serious health problems for obese and hyperlipidemic population ( Sun et al, 2021 ).…”

“…2017/2470. Abdol Wahab and co-workers recently reported the state of the art in the oral delivery of this carotenoid [81]. Bovine lactoferrin is a protein that naturally occurs in cow's milk with numerous beneficial activities, such as antimicrobial, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory effects [82].…”

“…The maximum plasma concentration and peak plasma concentration were 1.3 ± 0.1 mg/L and 6.7 ± 1.2 h, respectively. Similarly, the volume of distribution and oral clearance were 2.0 ± 1.3 L/kg and 3.3 ± 1.1 L/hour, respectively [ 17 ]. AST is safe at a dose of 4–18 mg daily for 12 weeks.…”
