Nanocomposites of Two-Dimensional Molybdenum and Tungsten Dichalcogenides with Metal Particles: Preparation and Prospects for Application

Abstract: Literature data related to methods for the preparation, structure, electronic characteristics, and functional properties of composites consisting of nanosheets of layered dichalcogenides with metal nanoparticles have been analyzed. Prospects are discussed for the use of such materials in catalysis and for sensing as well as for construction of various other electronic devices.

“…260 More complex phenomena have been recently observed on these TMDC/metal systems, leading to the formation of gold nanowires on MoS2 surfaces 264 , or to the synthesis of TMDC hybrid nanobelts (MoS2, TaS2, TiS2, WSe2 or TaSe2) decorated with Pt or PtAg alloy nanoparticles. 265 Dedicated reviews discuss in more details the synthesis of TMDC/metal heterostructures 266 and the formation of composites including nanosheets. 267 268 It is worth mentioning an alternative strategy to prepare TMDC-containing heterostructures where the two components are synthetized at the same time.…”

“…Due to coupling interactions between plasmonic structures, there can be array-level effects with appropriate patterning, allowing for designed enhancement at specific wavelengths. These plasmonic properties can be harnessed to couple light into the 2D chalcogenide, enhance absorption and emission, as well as improve photocurrent responses to incident light in FETs [154,155]. “…TMDCs are inorganic compounds with chemical formula MX 2 where M stands for transition metal (Mo, W, Nb, Ta, Re etc.) and X for chalcogenides (S, Se, Te) . They generally possess a sandwich type of structure,in which metal atoms are located between two layers of chalcogen atom as shown in figures.…”
