Nanotechnology in medicine: European research and its implications

Abstract: In this study, we explore and discuss nanoparticles and nanoscale materials and their use in medicine (nanomedicine) and pharmaceutics (nanopharmaceutics). The study is aimed at shedding light on this highly multidisciplinary research field and at examining the influence of research funding, industrial applications, and legal and regulatory frameworks on the research in this field, a clear understanding of which is essential to efficiently support the translation of research findings into industrial and clinic… Show more

“…Challenges in exploiting the multifunctional potential of MNPs include structural design, biocompatibility, target specificity, optimal accumulation, dual magneto-photothermal mechanism and residence time in circulation. Furthermore, the production cost, cost effectiveness, quality control, standardization, and harmonization of regulations in different countries for the clinical use of MNPs need to be defined [ 223 , 225 , 226 , 227 ].…”

“…The necessity of an adequate regulatory framework is required, namely the development of specific and concise guidance and regulation regarding the manufacturing and assessment of pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic and toxicological profiles, for guaranteeing the ultimate safety and efficiency of nanotechnology-based formulations [94,95]. This issue was addressed during an international nanomedicine workshop sponsored by EMA in 2010 [96].…”

“…The patent cliff results from the expiry of patents for major pharmaceutical blockbusters, which leads to decreased revenues for the producers of the patented product. Therefore, uniquely formulated nanodrugs based on existing compounds may be one way to go for the research-intensive pharmaceutical industry to deal with patenting problems [44].…”
