Nanotechnology in orthopedics: a clinically oriented review

Abstract: The utility of nanotechnology in medicine, specifically within the field of orthopedics, is a topic of extensive research. Our review provides a unique comprehensive overview of the current and potential future uses of nanotechnology with respect to orthopedic sub-specialties. Nanotechnology offers an immense assortment of novel applications, most notably the use of nanomaterials as scaffolds to induce a more favorable interaction between orthopedic implants and native bone. Nanotechnology has the capability t… Show more

“…In certain patient groups, disability rates remain unacceptably high even in spite of timely and proper diagnostics and treatment [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]. Therefore, harnessing of bone regeneration by using xenogeneic bone implants instead of ceramic or metal alternatives is still an unmet clinical need [ 6 , 7 , 8 ].…”

“…For instance, the repair of large bone defects resulting from trauma requires a mechanically competent scaffold (Masquelet et al, 2000). Arthroplasty, on the other hand, calls for strategies that improve implant lifespan, as the longevity of conventional materials remains a major limitation in this setting (Smith et al, 2018). For this application, the key to success lies in improving the osseointegration of existing implants through surface modifications (Serra et al, 2013;Puertolas and Kurtz, 2014).…”

“…Травмы и иные приобретенные, а также врожденные патологии опорно-двигательного аппарата до сих пор представляют собой распростран нную причину инвалидизации населения работоспособного возраста даже при успешном исходе оперативного вмешательства [2][3][4][5]. С целью решения этой проблемы идет активный поиск альтернативных решений для механического замещения костных дефектов [6][7][8].…”
