“…3,10 Given their strong immunomodulatory effects, 36,109 these data are consistent with the cytokinedriven model for AD, although this remains unproved because both treatments have direct effects on keratinocytes. 35,110 However, these studies established the AD phenotype as reversible by using objective biomarkers (Fig 2, B).…”

“…As shown by Schindl et al [19], using human squamous cell carcinoma-derived cell line a dose of 2048 mJ/cm 2 of NB-UVB was required to obtain 50%–60% of cells positive for propidium iodide, which identifies cells with the loss of membrane integrity that is characteristic feature of later phases of cell death. However, a significant degree of apoptosis was already observed at the doses of about 800–1000 mJ/cm 2 depending on studied cell types and conditions of irradiation [20,22]. Importantly, an apoptotic dose of NB-UVB is very similar to the minimal erythema dose (MED) of NB-UVB observed by Gloor and Scherotzke [32] in Caucasian subjects, indicating that indeed UV-induced erythema might be an inflammatory response to the appearance of “sunburn cells” ( i.e ., apoptotic cells) in native human epidermis.…”

“…Studies of broad-band UVB (BBUVB)-treated keratinocytes have demonstrated that apoptosis is a direct consequence of dose and exposure time [2][3][4] . NBUVB is also capable of inducing apoptosis in keratinocytes, though at significantly higher doses of energy than BBUVB 5 . NBUVB 1,000 mJ/cm 2 induces apoptosis in approximately 50% of keratinocytes.…”

“…In keratinocytes, secreted TGF-β1 was downregulated less than 50% by UVA, while there was no significant alteration by UVB after irradiation with 20 and 40 J/cm 2 and 10 and 20 mJ/cm 2 , respectively 10 . The effect of TGF-β isoforms on keratinocytes during NBUVB irradiation at a dose that causes apoptosis has not been well-defined 5 . In the present study, we investigate the differences in TGF-β isoform expression in keratinocytes after exposure to NBUVB.…”
