NASA Advanced Concepts Office, Earth-To-Orbit Team Design Process and Tools

Abstract: The Earth-to-Orbit Team (ETO) of the Advanced Concepts Office (ACO) at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) is considered the pre-eminent "go-to" group for pre-phase A and phase A concept definition. Over the past several years the ETO team has evaluated thousands of launch vehicle concept variations for a significant number of studies including agency-wide efforts such as the Exploration Systems Architecture Study (ESAS), Constellation, Heavy Lift Launch Vehicle (HLLV), Augustine Report, Heavy Lift Propul… Show more

“…These tools are both widely accepted by the launch vehicle design community and utilize direct shooting and direct collocation optimization schemes, respectively. 17 While results from POST and its main competitor OTIS arrive at very similar solutions, 18 POST is used here and in the previous work because it is the tool in use at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center's Advanced Concepts Office 19,20 (ACO).…”

“…9 The POST tool will be used in this paper because it is currently applied within the Advanced Concepts Office at Marshall Space Flight Center to evaluate conceptual launch vehicles. 10 In order to generate a surrogate model, data from POST is required. The amount of data required for the model depends heavily upon the number of input variables of interest and the desired accuracy of the model.…”
