Nasal carriers of coagulase-positive staphylococci in a Nigerian hospital community

Abstract: Nasal swabs taken from 324 subjects in a Nigerian hospital were examined for the presence of coagulase positive staphylococci. The subjects used in this study included the patients, staff and "auxiliaries" aged from one day to 70 years. The results obtained show that approximately 50% of all the subjects were nasal carriers of Staphylococcus aureus and that age, occupation and length of the subjects' stay in hospital had a significant effect on this figure. It was also found that there is no significant differ… Show more

“…They inhabit the skin, mucous membranes, anterior nares, eyes and gastrointestinal tract of asymptomatic individuals [1][2][3][4][5][6] where they can exist as resident or as transient members of the normal flora without causing disease. However, some strains of S. aureus also cause infections in humans including food poisoning [7][8][9][10].…”

“…The results of earlier work by Paul, Lamikanra & Aderibigbe (1982) show that, like some other places, namely Britain, the United States and Australia (Williams, 1963), approximately 50 % of the population of a Nigerian hospital harbour pathogenic staphylococci in their anterior nares, i.e. are nasal carriers.…”

“…Several studies have reported that the rate of the nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus among the HCWs ranges from 16.8%-56.1 % [3][4][5][6] The screening of the nasal carriage in HCWs is an important component in the control of MRSA in any health care facility. The identification of the colonized staff members allows the appropriate management of these persons, to prevent the spread to others [7].…”
