Nasometric Sensitivity and Specificity: A Cross-Dialect and Cross-Culture Study

Abstract: A series of 514 patients seen at three clinics in the United States and Spain were evaluated using clinical Judgments of hypernasality, and nasometric assessment of oral-nasal resonance balance. Data from the nasometer were obtained while patients read a passage devoid of nasal consonants. Across all subjects, the Pearson correlation coefficient between the clinical and instrumental measures was 0.78. Prediction analyses revealed that maximum efficiency was obtained using a somewhat different threshold nasalan… Show more

“…The rater used the 4-point rating scale of the GOS.SP.ASS 98 (Sell, Harding, & Grunwell, 1999) to grade the speakers' resonance in terms of hypernasality. Single raters have been used in previous studies (Dalston et al, 1991(Dalston et al, , 1993. The procedure typifies common clinical practice.…”

“…The association between perceptual judgments of resonance disorders and Nasometer scores has been evaluated in a number of studies (Dalston, Warren, & Dalston, 1991;Hardin, Van Denmark, Morris, & Payne, 1992;Dalston, Neiman, & Gonzalez-Landa, 1993;Karnell, 1995;Watterson, Lewis, & Deutsch, 1998;Watterson, Lewis, & Foley-Homan, 1999;Lewis, Watterson, & Quint, 2000). An 8-bit prototype version of the NasalView that was somewhat different from the currently sold 16-bit version of the NasalView has been used in studies with normal speakers (Awan, 1998) and cleft palate patients (Bressmann et al, 1998(Bressmann et al, , 2000.…”

“…So geben Watterson et al [21] eine mittlere normale Nasalanz von 30%, Dalston et al [2] einen Nasalanzgrenzwert für Sätze von Nasalkonsonanten von 28%, Hardin et al [7] von 26% an. Dialektale Untersuchungen für 4 geographische Regionen Nordamerikas zeigten, dass die Sprache von der mittleren Ostküste eine signifikant hö-here Nasalität aufwies [17].Van Doorn u.
