Natriuretic peptides: Diagnostic and therapeutic use

Abstract: Natriuretic peptides (NPs) are hormones which are mainly secreted from heart and have important natriuretic and kaliuretic properties. There are four different groups NPs identified till date [atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) and dendroaspis natriuretic peptide, a D-type natriuretic peptide (DNP)], each with its own characteristic functions. The N-terminal part of the prohormone of BNP, NT-proBNP, is secreted alongside BNP and has been documen… Show more

“…BNP is mainly produced by ventricular myocytes and used as a biomarker for heart failure (Lehr et al 1991;Mueller et al 2004). There are four different groups of natriuretic peptides identified to date: ANP, BNP, C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) and dendroaspis natriuretic peptide, a D-type natriuretic peptide (DNP) (Pandit et al 2011). So far, three kinds of natriuretic peptide receptors (NPRs) have been found and widely distributed in the human body such as the heart, lung, brain, kidney.…”

“…BNP or NT-proBNP are secreted. Besides being capable of lowering blood pressure, NPs carry natriuretic, diuretic and kaliuretic properties [88]. NT-proBNP has been reported as an independent risk marker for SCD [61].…”
