Natural Dye Extraction From Teak Leves (Tectona Grandis) Using Ultrasound Assisted Extraction Method for Dyeing on Cotton Fabric

Abstract: Synthetic dye waste of textile industry has contaminated the water and aquatic living organism. One of the solution is used teak leaves as the natural dye. Common conventional extraction process is soxhletation which need more time and more solvent. One of extraction method that has been developed is ultrasound assisted extraction (UAE). The objectives of this research were to study the effect of solvent, extraction time, pH, and extraction yield. The conclusion of this research was optimum yield of teak leave… Show more

“…As confirmed by GC-MS analysis, fraction FA contains alkanes (namely hexadecane, 1-chloro hexadecane, heptadecane, and eicosanoid), alkene (namely 1octadecene), alcohol (namely 1-eicosanol), ketone (4hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone), esters (namely butyl acetate, isopropyl myristate, methyl decanoate, 11-methyl octadecenoate, 9,12-dimethyl octadecadienoate), amide (namely 9-octadecenamide) and glycerin (namely glycerin monoacetate and glycerin diacetate). These compounds mostly have chromophore groups that give specific colors (Qadariyah et al 2018) and the color of fraction FA was orange. Yet, no anthocyanins in fraction FA were detected by GC-MS analysis because the GC column temperature was 300°C, while anthocyanin's boiling point was more than 300°C.…”

“…Lismawenning et al (2013) had extracted young teak leaves with water and applied it to the glass. Qadariyah et al (2018) extracted teak leaves by 947 ultrasonic method with ethanol 60% and water as solvents and applied it to the fabric. Although the isolation of teak leave compounds has been performed, however, information on diversity of the teak leaves compounds is still limited.…”

“…Besides, they have natural dyes consisting of pheophytin, beta carotene, pelargonidin 3-glucoside, pelargonidin 3,7 -di-glucosides, and chlorophyll (7) . Teak leaves (Tectona grandis) can be used as natural dyes because they contain anthocyanins as a brown color source (8) . Anthocyanins are amphoteric compounds that can react with both acids and alkalis.…”
