Natural Dyeing of Silk Fabrics with Humulus japonicus Extract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the dyeability of silk fabrics with Humulus japonicus (Hwansam) extract which is a kind of weeds that grows wild in the suburbs. In the research, the general extract method was conducted with the extract from fresh herb of root-removed Humulus japonicus while we investigated the optimal dyeing conditions and dyeability depending on the changes of the kind of mordants, methods and temperature. The functional properties such as antibacterial activities, deodorization a… Show more

“…In addition, the demand for dyeing products is still low due to the difficulty in mass production, as most of the work consists of manual dip dyeing, an increase in raw material costs due to rare natural dyes and consumer awareness that most products on the market are expensive (Nam, 2008). Therefore, to commercialize natural dyeing, it is important to develop new dyes and optimize the various color development and dyeing processes (Ha, 2016).…”

“…Among them, the extract of Spanish needles showed excellent color fastness and antimicrobial activity when used to dye silk and cotton (Lee, 2015). American Fleabane dyeing showed improved dyeability in wool compared to cotton (Shin and Cho, 2003), and Humulus japonicus developed red purple colors when used to dye cotton fabric after pre-mordanting with soybean extracts and iron (Ha, 2016). Equisetum arvense L. ( Equisetum ), the field horsetail or common horsetail, is a perennial plant of Family Equisetaceae (Kong, 2013).…”
