Natural fibre composites – an alternative to plastics in the automotive industry: A review

Abstract: Natural fibre composites are ideal material substitutes for combating the issues of pollution and non-biodegradability. Several industries, the automobile industry, in particular, have shown tremendous inclination towards the usage of natural fibre composites in their deliverables. Besides providing a wide array of useful properties, natural fibre composites have offered flexibility in terms of choosing various combinations of fibres and resins. Owing to this, this paper aims to collect data and categorize the… Show more

“…In 2000 Audi presented the A2 car with the door trim panel of polyurethane with flax/sisal reinforcement whereas Toyota developed the bioplastics from sugarcane. Moreover, the kenaf/glass fibre epoxy materials are popular for the car bumper beam [ 137 ] and sisal/rosell hybrid for the inner elements and accessories [ 138 , 139 ]. Moreover, biomedical applications, in the case of protein fibres, are possible.…”

“…These properties contribute to its increased use as a polymer matrix material. According to research, CF-reinforced thermoplastic composites have remarkable mechanical properties and are finding increasing applications in the automotive and medical fields 2,27 . Qian et al 28 manufactured a CF-reinforced composite with a polylactic acid (PLA) matrix.…”

“…The fatigue of wood was, in fact, an active research topic until the Second World War because the wood was often used in load-bearing structures in construction and other sectors at that time. Then, the research focus shifted towards composite materials, thanks to their advantageous mechanical properties and low weight [ 116 , 117 ]. Today, wood is used in both traditional and advanced structures.…”
