Natural Products with Inhibitory Activity against Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1

Abstract: Infections caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are considered one of the main public health problems worldwide. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is the current modality of treatment for HIV-1 infection. It comprises the combined use of several drugs and can decrease the viral load and increase the CD4+ T cell count in patients with HIV-1 infection, thereby proving to be an effective modality. This therapy significantly decreases the rate of morbidity and mortality owing to acquired immunodeficiency syndro… Show more

“…In 1987, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved its first drug, zidovudine (AZT), which initially failed in cancer screens, to treat HIV [ 27 ]. The synthesis of this drug was inspired by a naturally discovered thymidine from a marine sponge, Tectitethya crypta , known as sponge thymidine [ 28 ]. The discovery of AZT has paved the way for several classes of antiretroviral drugs currently on the market.…”

Grape seed extract proanthocyanidins down regulate HIV-1 entry coreceptors, CCR2b, CCR3, and CCR5 gene expression by normal peripheral blood mononuclear cells [79] [Figure 1].…”

“…When the immune system is attacked by HIV without treatment, severe acquired immunodeciency syndrome (AIDS) will result, and unfortunately, there is no effective cure yet. 1,40 The presently accepted anti-HIV agents can be categorized as inhibitors of reverse transcriptase, integrase, protease, fusion, and co-receptor. Combination therapy using antiretroviral agents greatly suppresses viral growth and replenishes the immune system.…”
