“…Ra eq is higher than or comparable with that observed in other countries except those measured in China, Algeria, Brazil, Bangladesh and Malaysia (Alam et al, 1999;Amrani & Tahtat, 2001;Malanca et al, 1993;Mantazual et al, 1998;Ibrahim, 1999;Xinwei, 2005;). For white cement, the concentration of 226 Ra, 232 Th, 40 K and Ra eq activities are higher than that obtained in other countries except that the concentration of 226 Ra is less than that observed in Turkey & Pakistan (Mujahid et al, 2008;Turhan, Baykan & Sen, 2008) and 40 K is less than that measured in Kuwait (Bou-Rabee & Bem, 1996). uranium or radium, since the radon exhalation rate depends on the texture and grain size composition.…”

“…The specific activities of materials containing various level of 226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K is difficult to compare; so therefore, radium equivalent index was introduced. Radium equivalent (Ra eq ) was calculated from equation (3): 1922 where C Ra , C Th , and C K are the specific activities concentration of 226 Ra, 232 Th, and 40 K, respectively. The calculation of radium equivalent concentration was based on the assumption that 370 Bq kg −1 of 226 Ra, 259 Bq kg −1 of 232 Th, and 4810 Bq kg −1 of 40 K produce the same γ-rays radiation dose of 1.5 mSv y −1 .…”

“…The activity concentration of natural radionuclides in construction materials has been estimated in various countries and areas of the world such as Australia,[14] Bangladesh,[15] Pakistan,[1617] Tanzania,[18] Eastern Europe,[19] Syria,[20] Kuwait,[21] China,[22] Egypt,[23242526] and Cyprus.
