“…The obtained mean ACs of 40 K, 232 Th and 226 Ra in the soils were below global average values of 420, 45 and 32 Bq/kg, respectively, reported by the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effect of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) [ 1 ]. The mean ACs being reported in this study are in tandem with earlier studies on farm soil from other parts of Nigeria [ 3 , [29] , [30] , [31] , [32] , [33] ]. However, the ACs of 40 K, 226 Ra and 232 Th measured in soils of Ropp, Bitsichi, Bukuru and Abeokuta [ 8 , [34] , [35] , [36] ] were about a factor of two higher than what is being reported in this current study.…”

“…Ajayi [ 22 ] noted that the content of 40 K in soil of western Nigeria is due to the occurrence of feldspars of potassium found in the region. 40 K is ubiquitous in the earth crust, the content of it in farm soil may also, in part, be ascribed to fertilizers as well as manure residues that may have accumulated in the soil following decades of farming activities [ 24 , 32 ]. This claim collaborates with earlier observation made by Isinkaye [ 42 ] in mechanized farms located in Ekiti state where higher 40 K AC than other radionuclides was reported, which was attributed to incessant intense application of NPK 15:15:15, a potassium-based fertilizer formulation.…”

“…When the results obtained were compared with recommended limit (RL), it was observed that more doses are ingested from the consumption of Catfish compared to Tilapia and the values of the effective doses increase in the order of adult < 15 years < 10 years < 5 years < fishermen. Nevertheless, each and every one of these values were quite low compared to the mean world value of 1000 µSvy −1 and hence pose no serious radiation hazard [22,[27][28][29][30][31], but it is recommended that Tilapia should be consumed instead of Catfish in cases of long-term radiation injury.…”

“…The main natural radioactive isotopes 238 U, and 232 Th, and their decay products, and 40 K produce significant outdoor exposure [4,5]. Natural radionuclides naturally expose humans to radiation.…”

“…Natural radionuclides naturally expose humans to radiation. However, agricultural practices such as fertilization processes and agrochemical inputs applied to increase productivity contribute to the increase in the radioactivity content of the soil [4]. In addition, radionuclides in phosphate rocks can increase radioactivity due to phosphogypsum used in building construction [6].…”
