Naturally Occurring Infectious Fibroma in the Domestic Rabbit

Abstract: Infectious fibromas developed in eight domestic rabbits that were all kept in outside cages. Each rabbit had a single cutaneous tumor. Six of these tumors, which were studied by light microscopy, consisted of tumor cells resembling fibroblasts and large areas of inflammation. The overlying epidermis was hyperplastic and contained easily recognizable intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies. Inclusion bodies were also in subepithelial fibroma cells. Electron microscopy of three of these tumors revealed typical pox-vir… Show more

“…The well developed ergastoplasm with much rough endoplasmic reticulum, and the abundance of intercellular fibrous material indicated the secretory activity of the tumor cells. This material contained large amounts of well differentiated collagen fibrils; the general morphological appearance of the tumor cells closely resembled that of fibroblasts in normal connective tissue [16,20] and in fibroblastic tumors [6,10,11,19,24]. Intercellular junctional complexes have been seen in other mesenchymal neoplasms [6,101 and also have been reported in a human cerebellar fibroma [13].…”

“…This correlates well with previous studies. 16,34 Epithelial tumors consisted largely of adenomas and only few carcinomas. To the authors' knowledge, apocrine carcinomas and meibomian adenomas have not previously been described.…”

“…34,45 Approximately 7 to 12 days after the infection, animals develop one or multiple firm nodules that spontaneously regress over the course of a few weeks. 33,34 In newborn, young juvenile, or immunosuppressed rabbits, the tumors may persist and metastasize, leading to the death of the animal. 16,33,34 Shope papilloma is also transmitted by biting arthropods, yet it is caused by a papovavirus.…”

“…A polyomavirus (papovaviridae) has been associated with cutaneous neoplasia in hamsters (Graffi et al 1968). Poxviruses cause proliferative skin lesions in squirrels (Hirth et al 1969, O'Connor et al 1980, rabbits (Shope 1932, Pulley & Shively 1973, and primates (Behbehani et al 1968). Retroviruses have been associated with fibromas and sarcomas in several species including initial studies have been unsuccessful.…”
