Near-Infrared Broadband Cavity-Enhanced Spectroscopic Multigas Sensor Using a 1650 nm Light Emitting Diode

Abstract: A near-infrared broadband cavity-enhanced sensor system was demonstrated for the first time using an energy-efficient light emitting diode (LED) with a central emission wavelength at 1650 nm and a light power of ∼16 mW. A portable absorption gas cell was designed for realizing a compact and stable optical system for easy alignment. An ultrashort 8-cm-long cavity was fabricated consisting of two mirrors with a ∼99.35% reflectivity. Methane (CH4) measurement was performed employing two detection schemes, i.e., N… Show more

“…The laser frequency is modulated by a high-frequency sine wave signal-modulated scanning signal with an angular frequency of . The instantaneous laser frequency is: where is the frequency of the scanned signal and β is the amplitude of the frequency change of the sinusoidal modulation, which we define as the modulation factor as the ratio of its half-height width to that of the absorption peak ( Zheng et al, 2019 ; Pi et al, 2022 ): …”

“…Many of these metamaterial-based light sources offer an easy way to control the wavelength of the emission through scaling the unit cell design to longer or shorter wavelengths, as compared to other light sources [34,35]. In contrast to this, incoherent light sources, such as MIR light-emitting diodes (LEDs), have also received attention due to their small size and low power consumption [36][37][38]. Among the MIR LEDs, super-luminescent light-emitting diodes (sLEDs) offer a unique combination of high brightness, good beam directionality and broadband capability [39].…”

“…Infrared absorption spectroscopy has been maturely applied to the analysis and characterization of gas and liquid analytes. However, a sensor system consisting of discrete components and modules usually has a large size and heavy weight, which is not preferred for portable sensing applications. At the same time, environmental vibrations and high power consumption also limit the application of such sensors.…”
