Nectar- and stigma exudate-specific expression of an acidic chitinase could partially protect certain apple cultivars against fire blight disease

Abstract: Main conclusion Certain apple cultivars accumulate to high levels in their nectar and stigma exudate an acidic chitinase III protein that can protect against pathogens including fire blight disease causing Erwinia amylovora.

“…Among them, m.172302 (chitinase) and m.144144 (hevamine-A precursor), two basic vacuolar chitinases with lysozyme activity (Subroto et al 1996), were induced by ethephon both in high-and low-sugar genotypes. While m.71264 (chitinase) and m.44939 (chn1, acidic endochitinase-like), which also play an important role on disease defense reaction (Kurilla et al 2019), were induced by ethylene only in lowsugar genotype. The results suggest that different chitinases elicit diverse functions in sugarcane.…”

“…Some cis-acting regulatory elements are involved in stress responses, such as hormones, dehydration, and cold responses (Liu et al, 2017;Osakabe et al, 2014;Pieterse & Van Loon, 2004;Sakuma et al, 2002). Some cis-acting regulatory elements are known to mediate plant immunity (Kurilla et al, 2019;Shan et al, 2016;Yu et al, 2019). The predicted cis-acting regulatory elements in the promoter regions of TaUBPs are provided in Table S4.…”

“…For example, VdMYB1 binds to the MBS in the VdSTS2 gene promoter, thus activating VdSTS2 transcription and positively regulating defense responses [36]. Machi3-1 and TaRIM1 also bind MBS cis-acting elements to increase host resistance [37,38].…”
