Need for Lung Resection in Patients with Intact or Ruptured Hydatid Cysts

Abstract: Surgical treatment of lung hydatid disease is safe, with a good outcome and a low mortality rate. The lung resection rate was higher than most published series and reflects the relatively high proportion of patients with giant and ruptured infected cysts.

“…When our series and the other series were analyzed destruction and nonventilation of the remaining lobe parenchyma and irreversible alterations were the most common indications for lobectomy (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19). All the authors emphasized that lobectomy was necessary in cases of irreversible alterations in the lung parenchyma (1,5,8,10,11,14,16,(18)(19)(20).…”

“…However, when the English literature published in the last 2 decades was searched, rates of lobectomy were found to vary between 0% and 52.1%, while the rates of pneumonectomy were between 0% and 11.4% in the same series published around the world (1,5,(14)(15)(16)(17)(18). In this review for a series of lung hydatid cysts that had been operated on, the most outstanding study was published by Vaquez et al in 2009 (5).…”

“…6) Nevertheless, excessively high lung resection rates were reported in the literature for lobectomy as 0%-52.1% and for pneumonectomy as 0-11.4% in the surgical treatment of lung hydatid cysts. [7][8][9] Some authors pointed out the indications for lung resection as the invasion of more than 50% of the lobe by cyst or presence of multiple cysts in the same lobe. [8][9][10][11][12] This indications increase the resection rates very severely.…”
