Need of Iron Supplementation in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract: objective. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) increases the foetal morbidity and mortality and there is also risk of development of type II diabetes for the mother. In pregnancy iron supplementations are given to all the females in India. Data are not available on the relationship between serum ferritin and GDM in Indian populations.material & methods. Case control study was done on 90 women (30 GDM patients approx 28 weeks of gestation and 60 control subjects without GDM) referred to the tertiary care hospit… Show more

“…Preconceptional diabetes is a known risk factor for fetal congenital malformations, including oro-facial clefts (23)(24)(25)(26)(27)(28)(29). It is assumed that in the early stages of pregnancy, the harmful effect of hyperglycemia causes the more frequent occurrence of syndromes and malformations in gestational diabetes, as a direct effect of low control or lack of control during pregnancy.…”

“…Even though the biological mechanism involving high serum ferritin in the development of GDM is still unclear, Behboudi-Gandevani et al identified it as a sensitive and specific predictor for diagnosing GDM [ 29 , 35 ]. Research has found that high serum or plasma ferritin reflects elevated iron stores of the body and may be considered an acute phase inflammatory reactant [ 22 , 36 ]. Pregnancy is a diabetogenic state.…”
