Neighborhood Sociodemographic Predictors of Serious Emotional Disturbance (SED) in Schools: Demonstrating a Small Area Estimation Method in the National Comorbidity Survey (NCS-A) Adolescent Supplement

Abstract: We evaluate the precision of a model estimating school prevalence of SED using a small area estimation method based on readily-available predictors from area-level census block data and school principal questionnaires. Adolescents at 314 schools participated in the National Comorbidity Supplement, a national survey of DSM-IV disorders among adolescents. A multilevel model indicated that predictors accounted for under half of the variance in school-level SED and even less when considering block-group predictors… Show more

“…Pathogenic environments, in turn, refer to exposure to risky environments (Grigorenko, 2009) at different layers of social interaction, such as the household, the neighborhood, or the school. Pathogenic environments such as poverty, community violence, and household dysfunctions have been shown to negatively influence psychological development and well-being (Callahan, Scaramella, Laird, & Sohr-Preston, 2011; Cicchetti, 2004; Cicchetti & Lynch, 1993; Green et al, 2014; Green et al, 2010; Hammack, Richards, Luo, Edlynn, & Roy, 2004; Ludwig et al, 2012, 2013; Páez, Fernández, & Beristain, 2001; Richters & Saltzman, 1990; Taylor et al, 2006; Vanderbilt-Adriance & Shaw, 2009).…”

“…The synthetic approach is widely used in the field of public health, perhaps because of its simplicity (15, 21-23). However, if the characteristics of a large area which covers local ones are not constant and similar to each other, this method is discouraged and biased (24).…”
