Neonatal lupus erythematosus: a cutaneous cases based update

Abstract: Background Neonatal Lupus Erythematosus (NLE) is an uncommon autoimmune disease characterized by cutaneous, hepatic, hematological, neurological and cardiac involvement.Case presentationHere we report four cases of cutaneous NLE which were referred to our department in the last 10 years and update literature. The newborns presented with different skin, clinical and laboratory features. This underlines the phenotypic variability of NLE. We investigated the passage of maternal antinuclear antibodies (ANA) and ex… Show more

“…Infants with neonatal lupus who present with cutaneous, abnormal liver function tests and hematologic abnormalities usually have a resolution of signs and symptoms within 4 to 6 months, with the clearing of maternal autoantibodies. 1 , 6 This was true for our patient. Supportive measures such as avoidance of sun exposure and sunscreen application are encouraged.…”

“…The cutaneous lesions may be present at birth, but more often develop within the first few weeks of life. Savino et al [ 14 ] presented four cases of cutaneous NLE, two females and two males, who had no signs or symptoms at birth and they developed cutaneous lesions from 2 days to 3 months after delivery. Mothers were positive for Ro/SSA and La/SSB in all the cases and one of them also presented a positivity of anti-CCP and Rheumatoid factor, with a reduction in C4.…”

“…Amplitude-integrated EEG (aEEG) is a simple, real-time method for monitoring newborn brain function [ 1 , 2 ], which generates a considerable amount of information about an infant’s neurological status and prognosis by classifying background activity and assessing the presence of seizures [ 3 5 ]. In severely asphyxiated neonates, all persistent and most initial flat traces or burst suppression in background activity on aEEG correlates with severe deficits at 24 months of age [ 4 ], and the presence of seizure activity after birth is associated with poor neurodevelopmental outcome [ 6 ].…”
