Neovascularization in Recurrence of Varices of the Great Saphenous Vein in the Groin: Phlebography

Abstract: A method of improving radiologic definition in phlebography of recurrent varicose veins in the groin is described. Before injection of contrast material, venous return from the distal part of the limb was temporarily suspended by inflating a tourniquet surrounding the lower part of the thigh to a level higher than the systolic pressure. Toward the end of the injection procedure the patient performed a valsalva maneuver. Phlebography showed that the recurrent varices were more frequently in continuity with the … Show more

“…The prevailing definition is the presence of tortuous new veins in a previously obliterated area such as the SFJ or SPJ 20 . The term was used in the present study when veins with reflux were seen at follow-up in the SFJ or SPJ if postoperative duplex imaging had shown obliteration after surgery.…”

“…In 1988 GLASS reported the results of a phlebographic study to investigate recurrent varicose veins after previous sapheno-femoral ligation (32). Neovascularisation at the site of transection in the groin seemed to be an important cause of recurrent varicose veins.…”

“…The color Doppler test is a standard at this time. (5,10,11) It enables us to localize the reflux site and differentiates between primary and secondary varicosities, at which stage surgical treatment is contraindicated. The other tests such as phlethysmography and phlebography are less frequently used today.…”
