Network approach to public-private organizing of destinations

Abstract: Purpose This paper explores a type of organizing that can be found in tourist destinations that are administratively bound to a specific geographic area in the intersection of public and private context. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of the organizing of activities within destinations and also to contribute theoretically and conceptually to how place dependency and public/private can be understood from an industrial marketing and purchasing (IMP) network perspective. “…In recent decades, the role and nature of PPI have been the subject of the growing interest of academics in management (Smyth and Edkins, 2007;Guzmán and Sierra, 2012) and has attracted the attention of scholars of the IMP Group to specific relational features. The search for a major collaboration between public and private actors has been studied, taking into account, above all, the opportunities it offers for the co-creation of value and the innovativeness of the public system (Nissen et al, 2014;Leite and Anna, 2018;Elbe et al, 2018), as well as the positive effects it may generate for the society. How to interact and what are the main aspects that make the relationship between public and private actors effective (or less effective) are some of the main questions that recent literature has tried to investigate.…”

“…In this sense, the dyadic dimension of interaction is embedded in the network, as public actors may assume different configurations and roles throughout the project. In public–private interaction within projects, the private actor does not interact with a single counterpart but with multiple public actors, taking different, sometimes overlapping, roles (Drejer and Jørgensen, 2005; Elbe et al , 2018).…”

“…From a theoretical and managerial point of view, DMOs should devise and implement strategies for the touristic enhancement of destinations by positioning a plurality of actors, resources and activities (Elbe et al, 2018) under the umbrella wellness brand who are able to offer a range of different wellness products (Figure 1). The composition of the bundle that constitutes the value proposition of wellness-driven destinations must be designed according to the resources available in a specific destination, the type of demand that is prioritized, in terms of single or multiple wellness needs and the market trends.…”
