ZusammenfassungDie Entwicklung alpiner Regionen ist weltumspannenden, wirtschaftlichen, demografischen, sozialen und kulturellen – im Beitrag schlaglichtartig aufgezeigten – Einflüssen ausgesetzt, die sich unter den Schlagworten Urbanisierung und Globalisierung zusammenfassen lassen. Was sich dadurch soziokulturell in den Alpen verändert hat und was der Wandel für die Regionalentwicklung bedeutet, ergründet ein Literaturreview. Urbanisierung und Globalisierung hinterlassen im soziokulturellen Geschehen vor Ort mannigfache Spuren, die von vielfältigen Vernetzungen und einer gewissen Fremdsteuerung zeugen sowie autonomes Reagieren evozieren. Dabei steht die Regionalentwicklung vor den Herausforderungen, trotz wachsender Pluralität und Diversität eine einheitliche Orientierung zu finden, sich strukturell zu reorganisieren, Kooperationen und Netzwerke auszubauen und Partizipation trotz der Multilokalität großer Teile der Bevölkerung sicherzustellen.

The study examines the Slovenian-speaking minority in the northern Italian autonomous region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. It explores the spatial fragmentation in the Slovenian settlement area in Italy and analyzes the socio-economic and demographic processes that exert influence on the minority. The work is based on the critical evaluation of the current status of research, of statistical data from the state censuses and results of own research on site. The Slovenian-language population in the entire region is currently estimated at about 46,000 people. The main settlement area is the eastern border region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, which is characterized by different cultural and regional identities. While the Slovenian-speaking population of Friuli focuses more on its cultural and regional distinctions, the majority of the Slovenian-language group in Venezia Giulia considers itself a “national minority.”

Nearly a quarter of the Alpine area is covered by a dense network of large protected areas (LPAs) of the four categories national park (NP), biosphere reserve (BR), nature park and world natural heritage site (WNHS). From the time of early industrialization, the Alpine area has undergone a mixed and increasingly polarized demographic development between the poles of immigration and emigration. This article investigates the possible mutual impact of population development and the existence of LPAs. The research design includes a quantitative survey of all Alpine LPAs in terms of their population development and the structure of immigration in the first decade of the 21 st century. This will be linked with qualitative expert interviews in four selected NPs. The overall results allow an interpretation of the statistical correlations between type of LPA and migration.
