Neural tube defects in pondicherry

Abstract: The rise in the frequency of NTDS may indicate the current trend of NTDs in Southern India. A further prospective study is desired to measure the effectiveness of regular folic acid supplementation in bringing down this frequency.

“…[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] In most of the studies, CNS malformations were commonest. [12][13][14] But in few of the studies, multiple system, CVS, musculoskeletal, G I tract or genitourinary system malformations were found to be the commonest. 9,[15][16][17][18][19][20] The commonest anomalies in our study were of CNS (53.3%) followed by G I system (13.2%), multiple system involvement (10.2%), musculoskeletal (9%), miscellaneous (6.6%) uro-genital (4.8), respiratory (1.8%) and CVS (1.2%) ( Table 2).…”

“…Besides other regions of the Uttar Pradesh State (Sharma et al, 1994), most Indian NTD risk regions are located in the northwest, such as Rajasthan or Pondicherry (Mahadevan and Vishnu Bhat, 2005;Blencowe et al, 2010) or the southwest, like Chandigarh and Davangere (Krishnaswamy and Madhavan Nair, 2001)(see also section 5.4.4.3). Vitamin A deficiency, for instance, remains a serious health problem for Chinese preschool children and mothers, especially those living in rural areas (Shi-an et al, 2004).…”

“…Yearly, between 65.7 and 82.1 per 10 000 births are affected with an NTD (Cherian et al, 2005). Notwithstanding the lack of (recent) evidence of NTD prevalence in India, it can be expected that this high NTD risk region can be expanded to the whole Uttar Pradesh State (Sharma et al, 1994;Krishnaswamy and Madhavan Nair, 2001) or even neighboring States (Mahadevan and Vishnu Bhat, 2005). Table 53 presents the health gap of folate deficiency in the current situation and after the implementation of FBR.…”
