Neurocognitive endophenotypes for bipolar disorder

Abstract: Results suggest that deficits on specific neuropsychological tests, most notably Digit Symbol, Block Design and Judgment of Line Orientation, may be indicative of cognitive endophenotypes for bipolar disorder. Replication studies are needed to further identify these deficits as endophenotypes for BD I.

“…Since memorizing two target colors at the beginning of each block was essential for successful task performance in the present paradigm, reduced activation in this region in bipolar patients, which was significantly correlated with their reduced performance rates in correct target acceptance, could indicate a disturbance of such working memory processes. These findings are in line with reports of visuospatial and working memory deficits in BD (Frantom et al, 2008;Lera-Miguel et al, 2011;Pan et al, 2011).…”

“…Researchers proposed neurocognitive deficits as a vulnerability marker or endophenotypes for the development of bipolar I disorder. 1,3,4 However, evidence is insufficient to conclude neurological deficits as important genetic vulnerability markers for the bipolar I disorder. Hence the objective of this study was to determine if any compromise in cognitive function could be linked to the genes and thus be viewed as endophenotypes of bipolar disorder.…”

“…This impairment is reported to be similar in euthymic BD patients and patients with schizophrenia when results are controlled for possible confounding factors (Addington and Addington 1998 ). In general, the unaffected relatives demonstrated an intermediate level of performance in comparison to the normal control and bipolar group (Frantom et al 2008 ). On the contrary, the visual motion integration was reported to be intact in BD patients (Chen et al 2005 ).…”

“…Reasoning seems to rely heavily on verbal and linguistic skills and thus in BD patients it might be important to consider it separately from the rest of the executive functions (Goodwin and Jamison 2007 ). Signifi cant impairment in executive functions except reasoning is reported to be present during all phases of BD (Elshahawi et al 2011 ;Barrett et al 2009 ;Frangou et al 2005a ;Frantom et al 2008 ;Goswami et al 2006 ;Martinez-Aran et al 2002Hsiao et al 2009 ;Martino et al 2011a ;Mur et al 2007 ;Rossi et al 2000 ;Sanchez-Morla et al 2009 ;Torralva et al 2012 ;Wolf et al 2010 ;Borkowska and Rybakowski 2001 ;Malhi et al 2007a ;Antila et al 2007aAntila et al , 2009Dittmann et al 2008a ;Basso et al 2009 ;Glahn et al 2007 ;Zubieta et al 2001 ;Tam et al 1998 ;Tien et al 1996 ;Brambilla et al 2007 ;Morice 1990 ;Coffman et al 1990 ;Seidman et al 2002 ;Fitzgerald et al 2004 ;Bora et al 2007 ;Selva et al 2007 ;Simonsen et al 2011 ;Dittmann et al 2008b ;Malloy-Diniz et al 2009 ;Ali et al 2000 ;Waddington et al 1989 ;Savard et al 1980 ;Rubinsztein et al 2000 ) and early during the course of the illn...…”
