Neurodegenerative Shielding by Curcumin and Its Derivatives on Brain Lesions Induced by 6-OHDA Model of Parkinson's Disease in Albino Wistar Rats

Abstract: Study was undertaken to evaluate the neurodegenerative defending potential of curcumin (CUR), demethoxycurcumin (DMC), and bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC) on 6-hydroxydopamine-(6-OHDA) induced Parkinsonism model in rats. Curcuminoids were administered (60 mg/kg, body weight, per oral) for three weeks followed by unilateral injection of 6-OHDA on 22nd day (10 μg/2 μL) into the right striatum leading to extensive loss of dopaminergic cells. The behavioral observations, biochemical markers, quantification of dopamine… Show more

“…Due to these diverse pharmacological effects it is being used to treat cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, diabetes type II, cystic fibrosis, asthma etc. [19][22]. One possible mechanism by which curcumin might exert its numerous effects is through epigenetic modulation by targeting various epigenetic factors, such as HDAC, HAT, DNMTs, and miRNAs [23][27].…”

“…Neurodegenerative disorders are neurological diseases that are characterized by extensive neuronal loss in the brain, and degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra region accelerates the progression of PD [24]. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of curcumin on oxidative stress-induced injury in a rat model of PD.…”

“…There is increasing evidence that curcumin could afford neuroprotection against oxidative stress-induced brain insult (Agrawal et al, 2012;Tiwari & Chopra, 2012). Curcumin protects neurons from Ab-induced oxidative injury (Huang et al, 2012) and preserves nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons in a 6-hydroxydopamine hemiparkinsonian model (Tripanichkul & Jaroensuppaperch, 2012).…”
