Neuroimmunomodulation by estrogen in health and disease

Abstract: Systemic homeostasis is maintained by the robust bidirectional regulation of the neuroendocrine-immune network by the active involvement of neural, endocrine and immune mediators. Throughout female reproductive life, gonadal hormones undergo cyclic variations and mediate concomitant modulations of the neuroendocrine-immune network. Dysregulation of the neuroendocrine-immune network occurs during aging as a cumulative effect of declining neural, endocrine and immune functions and loss of compensatory mechanisms… Show more

“…Increase oxidative stress in patients with breast cancer causes activation of the number of transcription factors and then lead to expression of the genes that include growth factor, inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and cell cycle regulatory molecules, 48 and then result in harm to DNA and impede signal transduction pathways responsible for cell proliferation, apoptosis, and angiogenesis. 49…”

“…Neuroimmunomodulation and its contribution to neurodegeneration has been vastly studied [ 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 ]. Maintaining a healthy interaction between neurons and the astrocytes, microglia, infiltrating monocytes, and other cells that initiate and modulate neuroimmune response is of great importance for neuronal health.…”

“…The intricate and complex interactions among these systems form a multidimensional network maintaining homeostasis and improving body function [ 62 ]. Estrogen affects the regulatory functions of the N-E-IN through a variety of ways [ 63 ]. The serotonin molecule is a classic neuroendocrine hormone.…”
