“…Muscle rigidity has been described previously following the use of both phenoperidine (Brown, 1964) and fentanyl (Holderness, Chase and Dripos, 1963;Corssen, Domino and Sweet, 1964). In this series, 6.6% of patients who received fentanyl developed muscular rigidity involving the chest wall during induction of anaesthesia.…”

“…Numerous reports have appeared in the American and Canadian literature on the use of these drugs in anaesthesia. In this country, the published reports have concerned either the use of the neuroleptanalgesic state in specialized forms of anaesthesia (Larson, 1963;Brown, 1964;Smith and Hollis, 1966;Cameron, 1967;Baskett et al, 1969;Kay, Keaney and Taylor, 1970;Monks and Lumley, 1972) or on the physiological effects resulting (Fitch et al, 1969;Hollmen et al, 1966;Prys-Roberts and Kelman, 1967;Forbes et al, 1967;Barker et al, 1968;Oyama and Takiguchi, 1970).…”

“…There is, therefore, a strong case for seeking alternative agents as supplements to nitrous oxideoxygen in neurosurgical practice. In the past neuroleptanalgesic drugs have been advocated for use in neurosurgery (Tasker and Marshall, 1965;Nilsson and Janssen, 1961;Brown, 1964), and it was therefore decided to investigate the effects of these drugs on cerebrospinal fluid pressure.…”

“…Neuroleptanalgesia has been recommended for certain surgical procedures, hitherto carried out under local anaesthesia alone or with other forms of sedation. Brown (1964) has reported a series of stereotaxic operations for Parkinsonism for which procedure a patient should be both tranquil and yet, when required, able to obey commands and carry out movements. He also stressed the need for analgesia since these patients have to lie for a considerable period on a hard operating table and to wear uncomfortable apparatus.…”
