Neuromyelitis Optica Antibodies in Patients With Severe Optic Neuritis in China

Abstract: NMO antibody positivity is relatively high in Chinese patients with severe ON and suggests a poorer visual outcome, probably higher risk of developing spinal cord lesions and a closer association with systemic autoimmune disorders.

“…However, as with optic neuritis in Western countries, optic neuritis in Asia has been reported to have different clinical features and visual outcomes with typical IDON [6][7][8][9][10][11]. Even so, very few studies have investigated the neurological outcome of optic neuritis in Chinese population, especially in terms of the predictive factors [12][13][14][15]. Herein, we report a retrospective study of the visual and neurological outcomes of a group of idiopathic optic neuritis (ION) patients in Chinese population, with special attention to the conversion to MS or NMO and the related predictive factors.…”

“…sensitive and specific biomarker for the discrimination of NMO, classic MS, and other neurological diseases [8]. Moreover, poorer visual outcomes during acute ON attacks were found to be more frequent among seropositive patients compared to seronegative patients based on a population of 34 severe ON patients [9].…”

“…Among patients with acute monosymptomatic optic neuritis, 13% were seropositive for AQP4 antibodies in Hong-Kong [130], whereas 5.8% were seropositive in Germany [131]. Among patients with severe optic neuritis, 32.4% were seropositive for AQP4 antibodies in China [132], whereas 12% were seropositive in Spain [133 & ]. Isolated optic neuritis has been reported to be common in patients with MOG antibodies [113,115,116,119].…”
