Neurotransmitter Systems and Personality Measurements:A Study in Psychosomatic Patients and Healthy Subjects

Abstract: A comparative study performed in psychosomatic patients (PG) and healthy subjects (HG) reveals several correlations between personality measurements (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, Sensation Seeking Scale, Susceptibility to Punishment), and biochemical variables (in serum: MHPG, acetylcholinesterase, calcium, melatonin; and in platelets: monoamine oxidase B, serotonin, calcium, proteins). The relationship between some Sensation Seeking subscales and the enzymatic activities evaluated (negative wi… Show more

“…Noradrenergic neurons stimulate TSH release. A negative relationship between sensation seekingand measures of noradrenergic turnover has been described [25,[27][28][29]. Similar results have been found by Schallinget al [30] using the Monot ony Avoidance Scale, which bears a close resemblance to sensation seeking.…”

“…Also expected were the correlations observed between the anxiety scales. The relationships between sensation-seeking and anxiety measures in corre lational analysis show the existence of orthogonality be tween these dimensions as found in other studies [24,25], Although a significant relationship among the endocri nological variables studied might be expected, the lack of significant relationships is not a new finding [ 18. 26].…”

“…Gerra et al’s (1999) study of healthy adults demonstrated a positive association between NE concentration and sensation seeking on Zuckerman et al’s (1964) scale, whereas similar studies of clinical populations reported negative correlations (Ballenger et al, 1983; Arque et al, 1988; Zuckerman, 1994). Studies of tonic endocrine levels in pathological gamblers also obtained mixed results (Ramirez et al, 1988; Roy et al, 1988; Schmitt et al, 1998).…”

“…For example, high sensation seekers based on the Zuckerman scale have been shown to have low MAO activity in blood platelets [111,112]. While these results suggest that the activity of monoamine brain systems may differ between high and low sensation seekers, this conclusion is speculative because platelet MAO activity is not a reliable index of MAO activity in the brain [113].…”
