Neutralization of the Virus of Poliomyelitis by Human Sera.

Abstract: PROCEEDINGSEleven control subjects taking the same food at the same time without addition of filtrates remained well, but one reported the occurrence of food poisoning symptoms. Since this individual had been made quite ill with filtrates the previous week, the second attack may have been due to suggestion or to association with those who were ill.The toxic substance in staphylococcus filtrates that causes food poisoning is destroyed by boiling and either destroyed or greatly weakened by heating at 60-65°C. fo… Show more

“…The exposures were non-traumatic and consisted of simple application of virus to the mucous surfaces. The evidence in favor of similar conditions in the human case are not only the occasional discovery of virus in the nasopharyngeal secretions and stools (11-13) of normal contacts but the general increase in the population of resistance to poliomyelitis with advancing age as shown by the curve of declining incidence of the disease in later childhood and adult life, and by the roughly corresponding increasing prevalence of neutralizing antibodies, (14,15) which is itself testimony to past exposures. Finally, the common occurrence of inftammatory lesions in peripheral ganglia of human beings (16,17), resembling those seen in our monkeys, may have a bearing on the subject.…”

“…It was decided to test sera of a group of socalled normal residents of New York City between 11 and 25 years of age to determine whether the virus and technique used in the experiments produced approximately the same proportion of neutralizations reported by others (9,16,21). Moreover, this would enable us also to compare the results of these tests with those of paralytic and non-paralytic patients in the acute stage of the disease.…”

“…Neutralizing substances have frequently been reported in the sera of so-called normal individuals (9,16,20). The incidence of these antibodies appears to increase with age (9,16).…”

“…In some women with this type of deformity the birth of a living child through the natural passages is possible. 4. The importance of at least one roentgenometric pelvic survey for every primigravid woman is an obstetric ideal which will rapidly become realized when the advantages of the procedure are fully appreciated.…”
