Neutrino Production of Lepton Pairs. I

Abstract: The neutrino production of a lepton pair in the electromagnetic field of the nucleus is treated. Using the local Fermi interaction together with the electromagnetic form factor of the nucleus, we derive rigorously the differential cross section d 2 a/ dr 1 dr 2 • In the case where the incident neutrino momentum and the two produced charged lepton momenta ri are coplanar, our expression is completely analytical.

“…Even if the weak bosons were not produced directly due to, e.g., their large masses, their existence could make the trident production rate different from that of the pure V-A theory (e.g., Refs. [63][64][65][75][76][77][78][79][80])…”

“…Neutrino trident production is a weak process by which a neutrino, scattering off the Coulomb field of a heavy nucleus, generates a pair of charged leptons [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. Measurements of muonic neutrino tridents, ν µ → ν µ µ + µ − , were performed at the CHARM-II [8], CCFR [9] and NuTeV [10] experiments: [11][12][13][14], will offer excellent prospects to improve these measurements [15][16][17][18].…”

“…The intriguing possibility that neutrinos may be charged under new gauge symmetries beyond the SM SU (3) c × SU (2) L × U (1) Y , and interact with the corresponding new gauge bosons can be tested with unprecedented precision by DUNE through ND measurements of neutrino-induced di-lepton production in the Coulomb field of a heavy nucleus, also known as neutrino trident interactions [320,321,322,323,324,325,326]. Although this process is extremely rare (SM rates are suppressed by a factor of 10 −5 − 10 −7 with respect to CC interactions), the CHARM-II collaboration and the CCFR collaboration both reported detection of several trident events (∼ 40 events at CCFR) and quoted cross-sections in good agreement with the SM predictions.…”

“…Neutrino trident production is a weak process in which a neutrino, scattering off the Coulomb field of a heavy nucleus, generates a pair of charged leptons, as shown in Fig. 8.12 [320,321,322,323,324,325,326]. Measurements of muonic neutrino tridents (ν µ → ν µ µ + µ − ) were carried out at the CHARM-II [433], CCFR [434] and NuTeV [435] experiments:…”
