Neutrophil Functional Heterogeneity and Implications for Viral Infections and Treatments

Abstract: Evidence suggests that neutrophils exert specialized effector functions during infection and inflammation, and that these cells can affect the duration, severity, and outcome of the infection. These functions are related to variations in phenotypes that have implications in immunoregulation during viral infections. Although the complexity of the heterogeneity of neutrophils is still in the process of being uncovered, evidence indicates that they display phenotypes and functions that can assist in viral clearan… Show more

“…In both acute and chronic inflammation, the genetic structures of neutrophils appear to undergo a reprogramming process due to the stimulation of external signals, resulting in dynamic transitions between subpopulations. 132 , 133 , 134 In inflammatory diseases, infection or ischemia can induce the production of G‐CSF, GM‐CSF, or other myelopoietic factors, which contribute to different functional neutrophils. 135 , 136 , 137 We will discuss what factors would contribute to neutrophil heterogeneity in the context of diseases.…”

“…The microenvironment will influence the function and phenotype of these cells. Neutrophils can have positive and negative actions for the host, most likely depending on the stimuli that they receive [ 42 ]. Neutrophils are highly plastic cells that can polarize in response to different cues into different phenotypes.…”

“…However, there is growing evidence, that during viral infections, neutrophils may play both beneficial but also detrimental roles. 21 , 22 Firstly, neutrophils are recruited to sites of viral infections. Using imaging of the liver microcirculation, unveiled a significant recruitment of neutrophils following pox virus infection of liver cells.…”
