Neutrophil–Lymphocyte Ratio as a Predictor of Disease Severity in Ulcerative Colitis

Abstract: Our results demonstrate that N/L ratio is higher in patients with active UC compared with controls and UC patients in remission and a cut-off value of 2.47 can be used to identify patients with active ulcerative colitis.

“…Consequently, the interest in blood parameters such as NLR and PLR, which is based on neutrophil, lymphocyte, and platelet counts obtained from CBC in the peripheral blood, has increased. CBC is a basic preoperative laboratory test to evaluate the concentrations of blood components in epithelial ovarian cancers (8,10,14). In a study of 136 patients, Bishara et al (15) studied whether pre-treatment WBC subtypes are prognostic markers in the follow-up course in epithelial ovarian cancers and observed a correlation between low lymphocyte fractions and mortality and also between high numbers of monocytes and recurrence.…”

“…The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) can be calculated easily from complete blood counts and is an easily accessible marker which indicates the state of inflammation in the body. Recently, the neutrophil-tolymphocyte ratio (NLR) was introduced as a potential biomarker to assess inflammation and to predict outcomes in cancer, cardiac and other disorders (Walsh et al, 2005;Nunez et al, 2008;Tamhane et al, 2008;Halazun et al, 2009;Celikbilek et al, 2013). We can obtain information about two different immune pathways from the NLR.…”

“…We can obtain information about two different immune pathways from the NLR. First of all about the neutrophils which are responsible for lasting inflammation and the second about the lymphocytes which demonstrate the regulatory pathway (Celikbilek et al, 2013). Cihan's study patients with BPH had a higher level of neutrophils (Cihan et al, 2013).…”

“…The NLR is a simple and inexpensive indication of systemic inflammation; its association with various autoimmune inflammatory diseases and cancers has been demonstrated in a number of studies (12,13). In the literature, the NLR has also been found to be associated with various liver diseases (14,15).…”
