Neutrophil‐to‐lymphocyte and platelet‐to‐lymphocyte ratios in dogs and cats with acute pancreatitis

Abstract: Background: Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) have been described as prognostic markers in cancer and inflammatory diseases. The use of these measurements in dogs and cats with acute pancreatitis has not yet been investigated. Objective: The objective was to evaluate NLR and PLR for usefulness as biomarkers for severity and clinical course of acute pancreatitis in dogs and cats. Methods: In this prospective study, we investigated 67 dogs and 41 cats with acute pancreat… Show more

“…İnsanlarda, CBC kullanılarak hesaplanabilen ve kolayca erişilebilen bir parametre olan NEU/LYM, sepsiste morbidite ve mortalitenin bağımsız bir prediktif indeksi olarak kabul görmektedir (Hwang vd., 2017;Naess vd., 2017;Liu vd., 2019;Ni vd., 2019;Huang vd., 2020) ve son zamanlarda köpeklerde yapılan çeşitli bilimsel çalışmalarda bu oranın da çalışılmaya başlanıldığı görülmektedir (Burton vd., 2013;Rejec vd., 2017;Troìa vd., 2017;Hodgson vd., 2018;Çakır & Pekmezci 2019;Benvenuti vd., 2020;Gori vd., 2021;Neumann, 2021).…”

“…Bununla birlikte veteriner hekimlikte NEU/LYM, MONO/LYM ve PLT/LYM ile ilgili sınırlı çalışmalar bulunmakla beraber konu ile ilgili çalışmalara ilginin giderek arttığı görülmektedir (Burton vd., 2013;Rejec vd., 2017;Troìa vd., 2017;Hodgson vd., 2018;Çakır & Pekmezci, 2019;Benvenuti vd., 2020;Gori vd., 2021;Neumann, 2021).…”

“…Higher NLR was associated with markers of more severe in ammatory bowel disease (Becher et al 2021;Benvenuti et al 2020). Few studies have investigated the ability of NLR to distinguish sepsis from systemic in ammatory response syndrome in dogs, nding no discriminatory ability for septic peritonitis (Hodgson et al 2018) and pneumonia (Conway et al 2021), and rather good chance to be useful for acute pancreatitis (Neumann S. 2021). A weak association between lower NLR and sepsis and between higher MLR and non-survival in dogs with sepsis was found (Pierini et al 2020).…”

“…Various inflammatory biomarkers are used in human and veterinary medicine for tentative detection, or rather exclusion, of active inflammatory, infectious and neoplastic processes [18]. Of them biomarkers based on complete blood count (CBC) such as total (WBC) and differential leukocyte count, as well as neutrophilto-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) have been investigated in small animal veterinary medicine mainly due to their low cost and broad availability [19][20][21][22][23]. The presence or severity of pancreatitis in cats have been recently linked to NLR [22].…”
